Everyone has at least one thing that they don't like about themselves, most commonly a physical attribute that they can't control or easily change. If you approached an individual however you wouldn't notice their insecurity until they put it into words or were consciously trying to hide this feature of themselves.

One persons insecurity could be someone else's defining quality

The project consisted of an almost performative aspect. The portraits were taken and printed and the individuals taking part where given the option to use a black pen or a scalpel to change the photograph or take out/edit what they didn’t like about their image. The edited photographs from these people became the final product.

"It's not all bad. Heightened self-consciousness, apartness, an inability to join in, physical shame and self-loathing—they are not all bad. Those devils have been my angels. Without them I would never have disappeared into language, literature, the mind, laughter and all the mad intensities that made and unmade me.”― Stephen Fry
